Back Home at Pepper Place with New Partners
This year, Breakin’ Bread, Birmingham Originals’ flagship event, is going back to its roots. Now, enjoying the finest cuisine and beverages in Birmingham will take place at the same cozy, local hub for southern flavor where it all began – Pepper Place.
Supporting local is important to the Birmingham Originals – from the locally-sourced ingredients all the way up to the locally-born and raised chefs who cook them, Breakin’ Bread features a flavor that is quintessentially southern, and quintessentially Birmingham. That’s why including a makers' market for this year’s festival was a no-brainer. Now, at Breakin’ Bread you’ll not only enjoy delicious local bites and beverages, but you’ll also have the pleasure of browsing and purchasing locally made crafts and creations from some of the South’s best makers and craftsmen.
Since 2002, Birmingham Originals has donated more than $125,000 to local charitable organizations benefiting children and families in the greater Birmingham area. The organization began partnering with Jones Valley Teaching Farm (JVTF) two years ago at the inception of the Urban Farm Project. JVTF builds vibrant, student-centered Teaching Farms on school campuses to provide an environment where young people can learn, create, explore and grow a healthy future for themselves and their community. Since partnering with Birmingham Originals, JVTF has been able to hire two full-time students as employees for the Urban Farm Project, as well as award several college scholarships, thanks in part to proceeds from Breakin’ Bread.
Established in 2003, Breakin’ Bread was named as a signature experience for “The Year of Alabama Food” by the Alabama Board of Tourism and was most recently included among the 21 Best Food and Drink Festivals in North America by Flight Network. This event is also counted as one of the Top 10 Attractions in Alabama.
